Schema Markup for Small Businesses: A Practical Guide

TL;DR: Schema markup is structured data that describes your page to search engines in a standard vocabulary. Google recommends JSON-LD. Small businesses usually need Organization or LocalBusiness on key pages and Article on posts. Markup helps machines understand a page but never guarantees rich results, and it must match what visitors can see.

If you run a small business site, schema markup can look like a technical chore with no clear payoff. The honest answer is that it is a low-cost way to state facts about your business clearly, and that the benefits are more modest than most guides claim.

This guide explains what schema markup is, which types matter for a small business, what Google requires, how to add it and test it, and one important change: Google no longer shows FAQ rich results. It is written by Janak Pokharel, an SEO practitioner and co-founder of Limi Creatives, with a focus on markup you can maintain yourself.

What is schema markup?

Schema markup is structured data, written in the Schema.org vocabulary, that labels the content of a page for machines. It states, for example, that a page is about a local business with a given name, address and telephone number. Google recommends the JSON-LD format when your setup allows it.

Google describes structured data as “a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content” in its introduction to structured data. It adds that markup can make a page eligible for enhanced results, but eligibility depends on including the required properties and following the guidelines. Schema.org itself defines the shared vocabulary used by many search engines.

Does schema markup improve rankings?

No. Google does not describe structured data as a direct ranking factor. It helps search engines understand a page and can make it eligible for rich results, which may improve how a listing looks. Valid markup never guarantees that any enhanced result will appear.

This is the most common misunderstanding. Treat schema as clarity for machines. It can support your visibility indirectly, but only the content, the links and the page experience decide whether you rank.

Which schema types does a small business need?

Most small businesses need three types: Organization or LocalBusiness for the business itself, Article or BlogPosting for blog content, and Product for items for sale. Choose the most specific type that honestly describes the page, and do not stack unrelated types.

Business situation Schema type Where to add it
Physical shop, clinic or restaurant LocalBusiness or a more specific subtype Home or location page
Online business or agency Organization Home or about page
Blog post or guide Article Each post
Product page Product with an offer Each product page

Google advises using “the most specific LocalBusiness subtype” available, such as a Restaurant or DaySpa, in its local business structured data guide.

What properties does Google require?

For LocalBusiness, Google requires name and address. It recommends telephone, url, opening hours, geographic coordinates and a price range. For Article, Google lists no required properties but recommends headline, image, datePublished, dateModified and author with a name and url.

  • LocalBusiness required: name and a PostalAddress with as many sub-properties as possible.
  • LocalBusiness recommended: telephone with country and area code, a working url, openingHoursSpecification, geo with at least five decimal places and a priceRange under 100 characters.
  • Article recommended: headline, representative image, datePublished and dateModified in ISO 8601 format, and author as a Person or Organization.
  • Author rules: list each author separately, put only the name in the name field and use a valid url or sameAs link, as the Article structured data documentation explains.

Pages must not be blocked by robots.txt, noindex or a login if you want the markup to be used. Violating the guidelines can lead to a manual action.

What happened to FAQ schema?

Google no longer shows FAQ rich results in Search. Its documentation states that the feature stopped appearing on 7 May 2026 and that the FAQ rich result documentation was removed in June 2026. FAQPage markup is still valid Schema.org vocabulary, but it will not create an expandable listing.

The change followed an earlier one. In August 2023, Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites, as its Search Central announcement explained. Today, the FAQ structured data page records that the feature is gone. If you already have FAQ markup, there is no need to rush to remove it, but do not add it expecting a visual boost.

How do you add and test schema markup?

Write the markup as JSON-LD, paste it into the page inside a script tag, and then test it with Google’s Rich Results Test. Check that every property matches visible content, and monitor the rich result reports in Search Console after launch.

  1. Choose the type. Match the main content of the page.
  2. Generate the code. The free schema markup generator creates JSON-LD for Article, Organization, Product and LocalBusiness pages from a short form.
  3. Add it to the page. The head is common, but Google reads JSON-LD anywhere on the page. On WordPress, use a header code field or an SEO plugin and avoid duplicating markup that a plugin already adds.
  4. Test it. Use the Rich Results Test on the live URL and fix every error. Warnings about optional properties can wait.
  5. Monitor. After launch, check the rich result status reports to catch template problems, as Google recommends.

Keep the markup honest. Do not mark up content that is not visible, do not invent reviews and keep prices, hours and dates current. The SEO check glossary explains related audit findings, and the AI SEO guide shows how clear entities support answer engines. Conclusion

For a small business, schema markup is a clarity exercise rather than a ranking trick. Add LocalBusiness or Organization to your key page, Article to posts and Product where it applies, keep every value accurate, test the live URL and expect no guaranteed rich results. Frequently asked questions

Is schema markup a ranking factor?

No. Google presents structured data as a way to help it understand pages and to make them eligible for rich results. It is not described as a direct ranking factor.

Which format should I use for schema markup?

Google recommends JSON-LD when your site setup allows it. Microdata and RDFa also work if they are implemented correctly.

Do I still need FAQ schema?

Not for Google rich results. Google states that the FAQ rich result is no longer shown in Search. The markup remains valid, but it will not produce an expandable listing.

How do I test my schema markup?

Use Google’s Rich Results Test on the live URL, then monitor the rich result reports in Search Console. The Schema Markup Validator can also check general syntax.

Can wrong schema markup hurt my site?

Yes. Markup that does not match visible content or breaks Google’s guidelines can lead to a manual action. Keep it accurate, current and relevant to the page.
