SEO audit for websites in Malta
Malta is bilingual by law: Maltese and English are both official languages, and English is the default in much of business, tourism and online services. The SEO question is rarely ‘which language’ but ‘how much Maltese is worth adding’ and how to set up an island address so search engines trust it.
These notes cover language targeting, the .mt domain and the quirks of Maltese letters and addresses.

Market notes for Malta
English first, Maltese where it adds trust
English is an official language and the practical default for B2B services, relocation, property and tourism. Maltese is the language of local identity and of many public services. For most commercial sites, a strong English version plus Maltese on the pages where local trust matters, such as contact, about and consumer services, is a sound arrangement.
Use en-MT and mt-MT with reciprocal hreflang. Maltese has a valid ISO 639-1 code (mt), so there is no workaround to make. Do not machine-translate your whole site into Maltese; weak translations hurt more than a missing version.
.mt, .com.mt or .com?
Malta’s registry, NIC Malta, has accepted direct .mt registrations since December 2017, alongside third-level names such as .com.mt and .org.mt. All of them sit under the Maltese country code, so Google reads them as signals for Malta. For a business that serves the island, any of them is a good fit, and the shorter .mt is easier to remember.
If you serve Malta and other markets, a .com with /en/ and /mt/ folders and proper hreflang is more flexible. Do not run the same content on .com and .com.mt without canonical and hreflang pairs.
ċ, ġ, ħ, ż and the għ digraph
Maltese uses four letters that English keyboards lack, plus the digraph għ. People typing on phones often substitute c, g, h and z, so queries do not always match the official spelling. Keep the correct letters in your visible text, titles and schema, and test your main terms in both spellings to see which results appear.
Make sure your CMS and database store UTF-8 end to end. Place names such as Ħal Luqa or Żejtun break easily in older exports and feeds.
Addresses: Triq, house names and the AAA 1234 postcode
Maltese addresses often use a street name with the prefix Triq (street) or Pjazza (square), and a house or building name instead of a number. The postcode has three letters that identify the locality, a space and four digits, for example VLT 1117 for Valletta. Write the address exactly as MaltaPost and your Google Business Profile show it, and repeat it identically in LocalBusiness markup.
Because many small businesses share a building name or a locality, include a geo property with accurate coordinates and a link to your map listing. It helps search engines place the business.
Copy-ready examples for Malta
Both snippets use placeholder data. Replace the domain, name, street, phone number, coordinates and prices with your own before you publish them.
hreflang tags
This set covers 2 versions (en-MT, mt-MT) plus an x-default. Put the same full set in the <head> of every language version, each page listing itself too; Google ignores pairs that do not link back.
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-MT" href="https://example.com.mt/en/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="mt-MT" href="https://example.com.mt/mt/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com.mt/en/" />
LocalBusiness JSON-LD
The postcode follows the Malta format (3 letters + a space + 4 digits) and the telephone starts with +356. Use the most specific business type that fits, and keep every detail identical to your footer, contact page and map listing.

Questions about SEO in Malta
Is English enough for a Maltese business site?
For most commercial sites, a strong English version covers most of the demand. Add Maltese on key pages, especially for consumer services and local trust, and only when the translation is good.
What is the difference between .mt and .com.mt?
.com.mt is a third-level name under the Maltese country code. Direct .mt registration has been open since December 2017, and both belong to Malta’s registry.
How is a Maltese postal code written?
Three letters, a space and four digits, for example VLT 1117. The letters identify the locality.
Which hreflang codes does a Maltese site need?
en-MT for English, mt-MT for Maltese, linked reciprocally, with an x-default on the language selector.
Is Malta in the euro area and Schengen?
Yes. It joined the EU in 2004, adopted the euro in 2008 and became part of Schengen in December 2007.
