SEO audit for websites in Albania
Albanian is spoken in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and by large communities abroad, so a site in Albanian can reach more people than the country’s borders suggest. That makes language targeting, rather than country targeting, the first question for an Albanian site’s SEO.
These notes are written for a site aimed at Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë or Albanian speakers elsewhere, and cover the letters, the diaspora and the local-data details that decide whether search engines trust your business listing.

Market notes for Albania
ë and ç: the letters keyboards drop
The letter ë is common in Albanian words, and ç appears often as well. People typing on phones or foreign keyboards frequently drop them, so some searches use e and c where the official spelling uses ë and ç. Test your priority terms both ways, keep the correct letters in visible text, titles and schema, and check that your CMS and exports preserve them.
If you create ASCII slugs, mapping ë to e and ç to c is normal but can merge different words, so define the rule once and use it on every language version. Digraphs such as sh, gj and xh are single letters in the alphabet but several characters in a URL, which can make slugs longer than they look.
One standard, three countries: sq-AL, sq-MK and the Kosovo problem
Albanian is an official language of Albania and, since a 2019 law, of North Macedonia, and it is widely spoken in Kosovo. A page about Albanian public services belongs to sq-AL, while a page about a business in Skopje fits sq-MK. For general guidance that suits Albanian speakers anywhere, plain sq is accurate and avoids claiming a country.
Kosovo has no official ISO 3166-1 code (XK is a user-assigned code), so hreflang cannot target it by region. Serve Kosovo readers with plain sq pages and make local signals such as an address, prices and phone numbers do the work.
The diaspora reads in three languages
Albanian communities abroad, including large ones in Italy and Greece, search for services, property and travel in their own language and in the language of the country where they live. A property agency, a clinic or a hotel can reach them with Albanian pages, plus Italian or Greek pages that are written by a native speaker and not machine-translated.
Use plain sq, it and el codes for content that serves readers in many countries, and keep sq-AL for pages tied to Albanian prices, addresses and contacts. Do not copy a Tirana service page into an /it/ folder with only the language changed; Italian readers expect the Italian context too.
Local data: postcodes, landmarks and consistency
Albania introduced four-digit postcodes in 2006 and rolled them out gradually through 2007. Some addresses are still given by neighbourhood and landmark rather than a formal street number. Use the full address your map listing shows, add accurate coordinates in the geo property and keep the postcode as text.
Because Albania is an EU candidate with negotiations under way, many sites publish legal and compliance guides. Date these pages, link to the primary source (the Commission or the official gazette) and revise them when the rules change; stale legal advice is a trust problem, not only a ranking one.
Copy-ready examples for Albania
Both snippets use placeholder data. Replace the domain, name, street, phone number, coordinates and prices with your own before you publish them.
hreflang tags
This set covers 3 versions (sq-AL, en, it) plus an x-default. Put the same full set in the <head> of every language version, each page listing itself too; Google ignores pairs that do not link back.
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="sq-AL" href="https://example.al/sq/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="https://example.al/en/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="it" href="https://example.al/it/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.al/sq/" />
LocalBusiness JSON-LD
The postcode follows the Albania format (4 digits) and the telephone starts with +355. Use the most specific business type that fits, and keep every detail identical to your footer, contact page and map listing.

What the audit looks at
What the audit checks for Albania
UTF-8 and Albanian letters
We check the charset declaration and look for broken ë and ç in titles, descriptions and structured data.
hreflang for sq, sq-AL, sq-MK and visitor languages
The audit verifies reciprocal tags, valid ISO codes and a self-reference on every page.
Canonicals on language folders
Each language version should canonicalise to itself so that the Albanian, English and Italian pages stay eligible for search.
LocalBusiness schema
We validate required properties, the +355 telephone, coordinates and the four-digit postcode stored as text.
Questions about SEO in Albania
Should I use sq-AL or plain sq?
Use sq-AL for pages tied to Albania, such as local prices, addresses and contacts, and plain sq for general Albanian-language content that serves readers in several countries.
Can hreflang target Kosovo?
Not by region. Kosovo has no official ISO 3166-1 code, and XK is only a user-assigned code. Use plain sq and local signals instead.
Do I need Italian or Greek pages?
If your business serves visitors or the diaspora from those countries, yes, written by native speakers. They are separate language versions with their own URLs and hreflang.
Is Albania in the EU?
No. It is a candidate country, and accession negotiations were formally opened in July 2022. It is not in the EEA or Schengen.
How do I write an Albanian postal code?
As four digits, such as 1001 for Tirana, stored as text and repeated identically in your schema, footer and map listing.
