SEO audit for websites in Montenegro

Montenegro has two features that no template accounts for. Its country-code domain, .me, is one that Google treats as generic, so it does not tell search engines you are in Montenegro. And its official language, Montenegrin, has no ISO 639-1 code, which is what Google’s hreflang documentation asks for.

The notes below explain what to do about both, and about the other details that matter for a site aimed at Podgorica, Budva, Kotor or the coast.

Market notes for Montenegro

.me is not a country signal

Google’s international-targeting guidance says it treats some vanity country-code domains, such as .tv and .me, as generic domains. A .me address therefore says nothing about Montenegro to search engines. It might as well be a .com.

If your audience is in Montenegro, you have to say so in other ways: local content in the languages people read, prices in euro, a +382 number, a Montenegrin address in schema, local links, and hreflang for the language versions. If you are a global brand with a clever .me name, make sure no page on the site tells search engines that the site is for Montenegro unless it really is.

Hreflang for a language with no ISO 639-1 code

Montenegrin is the official language, with the code cnr in ISO 639-2 and 639-3 only. Google’s hreflang guidance asks for ISO 639-1 language codes, so there is no value that says ‘Montenegrin’. Sites normally use sr-ME, sometimes with a script subtag such as Latn or Cyrl, and accept the compromise.

If your audience thinks of the language as Montenegrin, write that on the language selector and keep sr-ME only in the tags that machines read. Whatever you choose, apply it consistently, link the versions reciprocally and avoid labelling the same page with two different language codes.

Latin, Cyrillic and the ś/ź debate

Both Latin and Cyrillic are in use. Montenegrin also has two proposed letters, ś and ź, added in a 2009 standard, but their use is contested and not applied uniformly, so many people type sj and zj, or s and z. Do not rely on ś or ź in slugs or primary keywords; if you use them in text, test whether people search for them.

Offering both scripts is useful for a public-sector or heritage site. Where you offer Cyrillic, give it its own URLs and hreflang with a script subtag, and use a reliable transliteration rather than hand-edited copy in two scripts.

Euro prices, coastal seasons and local proof

Montenegro uses the euro unilaterally and is not a member of the euro area, which has no effect on how you write prices: use EUR in schema and feeds. Because the .me domain does not carry the geographic signal, give every business page the local proof that does: a postcode (five digits, such as 81000 for Podgorica), a +382 number and a complete address with coordinates.

Much of the demand on the coast is seasonal. Update opening hours, the availability of rooms and tours, and the date of the last review before each season starts, and keep sitemaps and structured data in step.

Copy-ready examples for Montenegro

Both snippets use placeholder data. Replace the domain, name, street, phone number, coordinates and prices with your own before you publish them.

hreflang tags

This set covers 3 versions (sr-ME, en, ru) plus an x-default. Put the same full set in the <head> of every language version, each page listing itself too; Google ignores pairs that do not link back.

<link rel="alternate" hreflang="sr-ME" href="https://example.me/me/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="https://example.me/en/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="ru" href="https://example.me/ru/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.me/en/" />

LocalBusiness JSON-LD

The postcode follows the Montenegro format (5 digits) and the telephone starts with +382. Use the most specific business type that fits, and keep every detail identical to your footer, contact page and map listing.

What the audit looks at

What the audit checks for Montenegro

  • Valid hreflang values

    We flag unsupported codes such as cnr and suggest sr-ME or a script-qualified alternative, and check reciprocal links.

  • Domain signal versus audience

    If a .me site is meant for Montenegro, the audit checks for local signals in content, schema and hreflang that replace the missing country-code signal.

  • UTF-8 and the Montenegrin letters

    We look for broken č, ć, š, ž, đ and Cyrillic letters in titles and structured data.

  • LocalBusiness schema in euro

    We validate required properties, the +382 telephone and the five-digit postcode stored as text.

Questions about SEO in Montenegro

Does a .me domain target Montenegro?

No. Google treats .me as a generic domain, so it carries no country signal. Use hreflang, local content, a Montenegrin address and phone number and local links to show your audience.

Which hreflang code can I use for Montenegrin?

There is no ISO 639-1 code for Montenegrin, so sites use sr-ME, sometimes with a script subtag. Use the visible language selector to label the language the way your audience does.

Is Montenegro in the euro area?

No. It uses the euro as its currency without being a member of the euro area. In schema use the currency EUR.

Is Montenegro in the EU?

No. It is a candidate country, and accession negotiations opened in 2012. It is not in the EEA or Schengen.

Should I use Latin or Cyrillic?

Latin is the safer default for a commercial site. Add Cyrillic on its own URLs if your audience includes readers who prefer it.
